I made a bee skep!
I saw this charming bee skep pin cushion at The Attic many years ago. It was not an item for sale but something on the desk for the staff to use. Well…last year it piqued my interest again and I hunted the internet for bee hive pin cushion. Lo and behold, I found it! It was a kit from Teresa Layman.
Yesterday was the day to make it up. The process was straightforward even though it was fiddly. The covered cord was wrapped around a foam egg and pinned in place, then blind stitched together. The egg is then removed. The bees are bullion knots which were hard for me but I enjoyed the ribbon embroidery wings. I need to do another ribbon piece! The flowers and leaves were pre made and just needed to be stitched in place.
I found some cute pins hiding in my collection to display on it. The bee pin is by Just Nan and the roses are from Puntini Puntini.
I will enjoy this very much!
What a wonderful pincushion! I’m so glad that you could find the kit.
Thank you Jo!
This is really wonderful Mary! Well done!
Thank you Vickie!
This is just stunning, you clever thing. I am sure I have a pattern for something similar, using patchwork cottons for the coils, I’ll have to see if I can find it.
Thank you! I would love to see yours if you can find your pattern! If one knew how to make covered cord this would not be too hard to replicate!
Stunning, just stunning. What beautiful ribbon work, something I’d like to try one day.
Thank you! Although I can’t take credit as all the little flowers were pre made! But I think they would not be too hard to make, they are just gathered into a little round with a bead in the center. You’d just need to find the right size ribbon. The ribbon embroidery I have tried was very enjoyable though!
It’s beautiful!!!
Thank you!
Oh, your bee skep turned out so lovely, Mary! The ribbon flowerwork is gorgeous! I’ve never seen one made out of fabric before–glad you were able to locate the kit!
Thank you! Me too! I can’t take credit for the ribbon flowers-they were all made up and I just sewed them on! But I don’t think they would be too hard to make yourself if you have the right kind of ribbon.
Your pincushion is just adorable.
Thank you so much!
That’s a very different kind of pin cushion. I’m glad it was fairly easy to make and will be put to very good use! 🙂
Yes indeed! I enjoy trying out some different crafts from time to time too. This was very interesting to make up!
Wow! Jest przepiękna!!!
THANK YOU!
